Mumble - the Open Source Voice Chat Software
What is Mumble?
Mumble is a VoIP-software program, comparable to Teamspeak or Ventrilo. Mumble is for the most part usable in any voice application. Because of the excellent voice quality and low latency, Mumble is the only choice for gamers. Mumble also supports positional audio. Plugins for these games or games that provide this feature will transmit the gamers voice (in mumble) from where his avatar or character is in the game. This adds a new element to voice communication and is very useful and fun.
The software is designed like the classic "client-server"-architecture. The Mumble client recieves the mic input and transmits it to the server. To join other players together there is a server (called Murmur) that controls these various players and directs the transmissions. At present there are quite a few Mumble servers and we hope that many more spring up. We also support gamers with this excellent voice-software through our Mumble server hosting.
What Operating Systems are supported?
Mumble is supported on every Windows version since Windows 2000 (though it is officially supported on Windows XP or later) as well as on Linux and Mac systems.
Why Mumble? Why not Teamspeak or some other program?
Compared to Teamspeak, Mumble is open source software that simply is better. Mumble is always in development and everyone with the needed skills can contribute to improving and sharing in Mumble's development. Thus Mumble benefits through these advantages that only an open source program can give. Instead of the virtually license free Mumble/Murmur software, Teamspeak has licensing that resticts the number of servers allowed, and if you are a commercial hoster you must pay a fee. Also the number of slots is limited in Teamspeak and this causes unnecessary price hikes.
Mumble offers huge advantage over Teamspeak: noticeably better voice quality, lower latencies and full secure socket layer (SSL) The SSL means that your connection is encrypted just like a secure webpage would be, making Mumble more secure from hackers and people who would wish to steal your information.
